The Antipodean Artisan's Story

Bert and Me

Originally from Melbourne, Australia, I spent my childhood in ballet classes and wishing I was Danielle on Young Talent Time.  20+ years later Danielle is now Dannii Minogue (Kylie's sister), I no longer have the body of a dancer (but she does damn it!!) and never did make it onto YTT.  I did, however, manage to go to Uni twice, and learn to do my 'Day Job' and how to take photos. In between, I went to night classes and learned the art of pattern making and fashion illustration.  I have never worked in any of these creative fields, and can barely remember the technicalities of most of them.  I do however still love photography and fashion and am going to use my time here on this blog to share my creative explorations, but I will need help!!  It's been a long time.  I am just building up my stash of tools (the originals are in a shipping container in Australia at my parent's house...... at the back).

I came to the UK in October 2001 for work and travel.  It was the first time I had ever left Australia, and the first time I was without a sewing machine.  I have mostly fed my creativity through photography over the past 9 years, but I have recently taught myself how to crochet and knit and have even dug out my paint brushes too.  Basically anything that can be made, I will at least attempt it.

9 years later, after 4 jobs and 9 house moves, my beautiful ex boyfriend Hero Boy saw my creative  desperation, came to my rescue and bought me a brand spanking new Brother sewing machine - "Bert"......

................ and thus the textile journey has begun.
